The tragical eruption of Mt. Vesuvius on August 24th aD 79 as narrated by Pliny the Younger, nephew of the naturalist and admiral of the roman fleet Pliny the Elder, who died on the beach of Stabia trying to rescue fugitives from the disaster which buried several towns like Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis and Stabia. All partially unearthed by systematic excavations started from 1738 in Herculaneum extended to Pompei in 1748.
Carried on almost unceasingly throughout the last 250 years and still in progress .
